Day trip

Would like to cycle around one of the biggest lakes in the Balkans while watching rare bird species? Then Prespes should be your next cycling destination….

Lake small and large Prespa has been fairly deemed as a fairyland as they are embellished by dense forests of oak, beech and birch not to mention the countless myths, legends and the rich folklore. The Prespa lakes are famous for their natural elegance and serve as a natural barrier in the border between three countries: Greece, Albania and FYROM.

The two lakes are separated by a narrow strip of sand which was created through the combination of deposits originating from the valley of St. Germanos and the water currents of the lake itself. The center of Lake small Prespa is marked by the presence of an island, St. Ahileios with its likewise named church which dates back to the 10th Century. Psarades village (Greek for fishermen) is a unique settlement on the banks of Lake large Prespa. It has been declared as traditional settlement (i.e being culturally distinct) due to the remarkable architectural style of its buildings.

A one-day excursion at the Prespa Lakes combines the amazing landscape of the lakes with the National reserve which we will get to know while we cycle around Lake small Prespa. The stops along the way are necessary so we can enjoy and be captivated by the extraordinary scenery and the exquisite biodiversity of the lake. Exceptional bird species such as herons, cormorants, and pelicans will accompany us during our ride.

Next, we will cross the floating bridge in order to visit the island of St. Ahileios and the church of the same name. While crossing the island we will encounter the chapel of the Virgin Mary Porfyra built in the 16th Century in addition to the ruins of the church of St. Dimitrios and the Holy Apostles. Before we will the charming island behind we will enjoy a meal in the local tavern where will try local traditional dishes like the famous Prespa bean with carp fish.
